Latest update: Downtown Vancouver has descended into chaos after the Canucks’ devastating loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Smoke can be seen throughout the city from a large car fire burning in front of the Canada Post building at Georgia and Hamilton. There has also been a small explosion at the site of the car fire.
Fans are burning their jerseys in the streets and riot police are confronting people in balaclavas. Rioters are throwing bottles at officers.
Rioters are waving towels and hollering at the sound of explosions and smoke bombs being thrown at the crowd.
At 8:50 p.m., there are still thousands of people in the streets surrounding the epicentre of the chaos.
Several officers are on horseback and the Surrey RCMP and Abbotsford Police have been called in for support.
Windows have been smashed at the Bank of Montreal branch at Georgia and Homer and a couch believed to be from the lobby has been dragged into the street and set on fire.
Large windows at The Bay department store at Georgia and Seymour are also shattered, sending crowds running.
Tens of port-a-potties have also been overturned.
VPD and emergency crews are also dealing with a man who fell off the Georgia Viaduct onto the plaza at Rogers Arena. He said to be in serious condition.
Translink is re-routing buses and adding extra Skytrain service in order to get people out of the downtown core as fast as possible.
The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General closed all downtown liquor stores at 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in hopes of deterring alcohol-fueled violence.
